Filipino-American actress Hailee Steinfeld praised director Ryan Coogler for the success of their latest film Sinners, describing him as the creative force behind the movie. Coogler not only directed but also wrote and co-produced the project.

The film features Coogler’s frequent collaborator Michael B. Jordan in a dual role as twin brothers returning to their hometown, only to confront a far more sinister threat awaiting them. Steinfeld stars alongside him as “Mary,” a compelling character central to the story.

Steinfeld admitted that playing Mary was unlike anything she’d done before. “Mary has this fierce confidence and inner power—she knows it’s there, but she’s also discovering how to use it in real time,” she explained.

She was drawn to the role’s emotional depth and maturity, adding, “I’ve waited a long time to feel this deeply moved by a character. It was such a rewarding experience from the moment I first read the script.”

Conversations with Coogler and Jordan helped deepen her connection to the story and to Mary’s role in it. “It’s a complex and layered film, and this role pushed me in new, exciting ways,” she shared.

Reflecting on her first encounter with Coogler, Steinfeld confessed she was initially nervous but quickly felt comfortable in his presence.

“That’s what made the experience so special,” she said. “Ryan made every cast member feel valued and essential. That energy created a deeply collaborative atmosphere.”

She hadn’t yet read the script when they first spoke, but their discussion helped her grasp the scope of Coogler’s vision. “It all clicked into place after that conversation,” Steinfeld added.

Steinfeld described Sinners as a cinematic experience that invites repeat viewings. “It’s wild and intense, but surprisingly easy to understand when you let yourself be immersed in it,” she said.

“You’ll walk away with something new each time you watch it,” she added. Sinners premieres in Philippine theaters on April 19, Black Saturday.

Hailee Steinfeld rose to prominence with an Oscar-nominated role in True Grit and has since starred in films and series including The Edge of Seventeen, Bumblebee, Pitch Perfect, Dickinson, Hawkeye, and as the voice of Gwen Stacy in the Spider-Verse movies and Vi in Arcane.

Ryan Coogler is best known for directing Fruitvale Station, Creed, and Black Panther (both films), all of which featured Michael B. Jordan. He also produced Judas and the Black Messiah, Space Jam: A New Legacy, and Creed III.
